I don’t get too wrapped up in politics. I haven’t found a good reason to yet. Much of the political hoopla is like a rocking chair - it gives you something to do (or get upset about), but doesn’t get you anywhere. Call me new fashion, but the office of President doesn’t seem to mean that much anymore. For the last few decades, politics has morphed into a popularity contest - who is favored among white women, black males, or the latino vote. But as we all remember from middle school, doing the right thing rarely makes you popular.
Once elected, a president’s hands are tied by the very puppet strings that led to their election. I am reminded of a quote by Peter Ustinov, “In America, through pressure of conformity, there is freedom of choice, but nothing to choose from.” And so it is, another election year.
We are so far removed from the days of George Washington feeling undeserving of being our country’s first president. We are far removed from the authors of The Declaration of Independence, where our forefathers exercised wisdom & leadership unlike any Washington has seen in decades. We have long forgotten the words of that Declaration, describing governments as “deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed”. These days our “elected officials” care far less about representing the people, and far more about reelection. They are empowered, not by the “consent of the governed” but by the supporter’s pockets & special interest groups...whatever that means anymore. Face it, we are now a world of government sponsored cell phones. Its a run-away train, with only a crash in sight.
